Car Camping Tent Review – Sundome 4P

Car Camping Tent Review – Coleman Sundome 4P

In my previous blogs I have discussed camping for newbies and car camping – how to choose a tent. Now I am going to give you a tent review on my first choice of tent for a couple.

The Dome Tent for 2 people was my preferred starter tent type as discussed previously.

The tent I have chosen to review is the Coleman Sundome 4P. If you remember, I mentioned you should double the sleeper size to the number of people who will be sleeping in the tent, so 2 people = 4 sleeper tent and so on…

I have had a lot of experience with Coleman Dome Tents, but this one specifically I have not used, however I felt it is the best option for a newbie camper.

I have studied all the literature on it, hence it being my choice for you, and I can give you a sound review on it as well.

My Feedback

The Coleman Company has a good reputation and is world renowned for their high quality and effective designs in outdoor equipment.

Coleman Tents are generally known for their durability and efficient design and this one is no different.

This tent is made out of tough Polyester which gives the tent its durability, ensuring you got a lot of use out of this tent. With just two of you in this 4-sleeper there is plenty of space to enjoy a peaceful night’s rest too.

Ventilation is pretty good with 1 window and 1 door, as well as a rear floor vent to improve air circulation. The door can be kept closed and zipped down halfway revealing a window. I would prefer if this zipped all the way down though, so that more air could come in at floor level. I would also prefer 2 doors to allow for a full through-draft.

The Sundome is known to stand up well in light-to-moderate winds and withstand some decent rainfall too. However, I do not recommend using it in extreme weather conditions.

Also make sure your camp site is flat without any rocks as this might firstly, ruin your tent floor and will secondly, be extremely uncomfortable.

Speaking of the tent floor –the Coleman Sundome uses the WeatherTec System. The tent is designed with tub-like floors that have patented corner welds and covered seams. This kind of construction helps keep the water out.

Tip: While it is raining – DO NOT TOUCH the side walls. If anyone says their waterproof tent isn’t waterproof, I can bet you 9,999999 times out of 10 it’s because they touched the sides while it was raining. Or they were lying right up against the sides while it was raining. For this reason too, I always recommend double the sleeper space when choosing a tent.

Storage Pocket

On the inside there are built-in storage pockets which you can use to keep your belongings in. These are great for car keys, wallets and phones.

Another useful feature is the addition of an E-port, enabling you to charge your phone or use other electrical devices inside your tent by running an extension cable neatly into the tent from outside.

E-PortThe Easy Set-up bonus of this tent is due to it only having 3 poles and a few stakes. Please note that the stakes are very light weight, so if you are camping on hard’ish ground I recommend you buy sturdier tent stakes.

For the Pros and Cons section you will notice it is basically just a summary of what I’ve mentioned above.

Pros Cons
Good ventilation Flimsy tent stakes
Lightweight Not for use in extreme weather conditions
Smooth running zipper
Strong, durable poles
Electric access point
Easy to set up
